New to Our Collection: Week of September 20th

Another fantastic week of new arrivals from around the globe! Brazil adds two notes — a 2021 note featuring the Greenwing Macaw and a 2018 note featuring the Great Egret. Pakistan contributes a rare 2023 Replacement Note featuring Mohammed Ali Jinnah. From Africa, Congo brings a 2000 note featuring an Elephant from Virunga National Park, Zambia a 2012 note featuring a Fish Eagle and Porcupine, and Nigeria a 2024 note featuring Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Venezuela includes two 2020 high-denomination notes featuring Simón Bolívar. And rounding things out, a very special pair of World Expo 88 commemorative souvenir notes from Australia — legal tender only inside the Expo grounds in Brisbane in 1988, and now pure collector's pieces.

The Wealth of Africa: History and Heritage in Your Pocket

The continent of Africa is a vast tapestry of diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and complex histories. One of the most fascinating ways to explore this vibrant continent is not through a map, but through its currency. Banknotes are more than just money; they are paper archives. They function as miniature art galleries and historical documents that a nation chooses to show the world.

By looking closely at the imagery on these notes, we can trace the rise of modern nations, the preservation of ancient traditions, and the celebration of unmatched natural wonders. While our journey across the continent will touch on currency from dozens of nations, we will take a deep, specialized look at a remarkable selection of notes from central and southern Africa. This includes the stunning designs of Burundi, Congo, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. We will even step back in time to examine the currency of Zaire—a state that no longer exists under that name but leaves a profound legacy on the paper it printed.

Beyond these central features, we will catch glimpses of the currencies of many more countries, revealing a continent-wide story of pride and resilience.
