DETAILS:

 

Obverse: Features a Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) seated on a branch, along with the Indonesian coat of arms and denomination text in Bahasa Indonesia. Issued by Bank Indonesia during a period of political and economic reform following the end of the Suharto era.

 

Reverse: Displays traditional Rumah Adat stilt houses from East Kalimantan, Borneo, reflecting the rich architectural and cultural heritage of Indonesia's diverse ethnic groups across its 17,000+ islands.

 

The word Orangutan comes from the Malay words meaning "Person of the Forest." Found only on Borneo and Sumatra, the Orangutan is a popular topical collecting subject for wildlife and Asian currency collectors.
