Obverse: Portrait of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, whose image has graced South African banknotes since 2012. The South African Reserve Bank name appears in all 11 official languages of South Africa. Advanced security features include a colour-shifting SPARK® numeral, a windowed security thread with the SARB logo, and a watermark portrait of Mandela.
Reverse: A herd of African Elephants — one of the iconic "Big Five" animals of the African savanna. The green tones of the 20 Rand note beautifully complement the natural landscape scene. The protea flower, South Africa's national flower, appears as part of the decorative design elements.
