DETAILS:
Obverse: Portrait of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The South African Reserve Bank name appears in all 11 official languages of South Africa. Security features include a colour-shifting SPARK® numeral, a windowed security thread with the SARB logo, and a watermark portrait of Mandela.
Reverse: A majestic African Lion — the king of the savanna and one of the iconic "Big Five" animals of Africa. The rich orange-gold tones of the 50 Rand note perfectly complement the lion's natural colouring. The protea flower, South Africa's national flower, appears as part of the decorative design elements alongside the dramatic wildlife scene.
This is part of the updated Mandela "Big Five" series issued by the South African Reserve Bank. The Lion is one of the most universally recognized and beloved animals in the world, making this note a standout piece for wildlife topical collectors and African banknote enthusiasts alike. Pairs beautifully with the 10 Rand Rhinoceros and 20 Rand Elephant notes from the same series — collect the full Big Five!
