DETAILS:
Obverse: Makerere University in Kampala, one of Africa's oldest and most prestigious universities, founded in 1922. The Bank of Uganda text and coat of arms appear alongside the denomination. Serial numbers appear in black. The note features a watermark area at left and a security thread running vertically through the note. Dated 1996.
Reverse: A majestic African Elephant in its natural savanna habitat — Uganda is home to a significant elephant population, particularly in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks. The rich earth tones of browns and oranges give this note a warm, distinctive appearance. The denomination "500" appears at both sides.
Uganda's 1990s banknote series is highly regarded among African collectors for its wildlife imagery and vibrant colours. The P35a 500 Shillings note from 1996 is increasingly difficult to find in true uncirculated condition, as most examples entered circulation quickly. A wonderful piece of East African numismatic history, ideal for collectors of African wildlife themes or Uganda specialists.
